Martha Countess, a native of Durham, North Carolina, joined Tharrington Smith in 1982 and currently works as a legal assistant. During her first 12 years at the firm she worked in the former communications law section. Since then she has worked in the business, civil and criminal sections of the firm. Ms. Countess has experience working on business cases, estate matters, construction litigation, patent litigation, personal injury cases, employment matters, civil cases representing both plaintiffs and defendants, criminal cases, and trials and appeals in state and federal court. In addition, she has worked on cases before the North Carolina State Bar, the North Carolina Utilities Commission, the North Carolina Business Court, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Office of Administrative Hearings, the Federal Communications Commission, the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. Ms. Countess participates in a pilot program at the state court level to begin the process of filing court documents electronically. She is also very interested in technology and has taken further courses at North Carolina State University.

Ms. Countess graduated from Durham Technical Institute in 1976 with an Associates Degree in Secretarial Science. For the first few years out of school, Ms. Countess lived in Suffolk County, England. She now lives in Wake Forest with her husband and enjoys working with the Wake Literacy Counsel, helping novelists edit and e-publish novels, animal rescue organizations, house and pet sitting, piano lessons and mastering the art of Reiki. She works part-time as an Administrative Assistant for Ann Stewart Fine Art in Chapel Hill. Ms. Countess is an avid reader, enjoys cooking, spending time with family and friends, traveling, and various fitness activities. Swimming is her favorite.
