Tharrington Smith Attorney Benita N. Jones Selected for NCBA Leadership Academy

Tharrington Smith Education Law attorney Benita N. Jones has been selected as one of sixteen North Carolina attorneys to participate in the North Carolina Bar Association’s Leadership Academy. The Academy curriculum provides an intensely interactive and participatory leadership training program aimed to help young lawyers increase personal self-awareness, including strengths and areas for development; develop and refine leadership skills, including inspiring confidence, creating a clear and compelling vision, building trust, communicating effectively, and enhancing team performance; improve their ability to influence others; and use the leadership skills as they learn in order “to make a difference.”

“A large part of my love for the legal profession is the potential for lawyers to be citizen-leaders,” said Jones on being selected for this highly competitive program. “As lawyers, we strive to always be improving in our knowledge and understanding of the law, but working to shape effective leadership skills can help us become better advocates and change-agents.”

The NCBA Leadership Academy program includes a series of seminars aimed at helping young attorneys become more effective leaders in their professional, personal, and civic communities. The 2013 session completes its courses over the coming months with final graduation a ceremonies held as a part of the General Session of the NCBA Annual Meeting in Asheville.

“We believe that the North Carolina Bar Association Leadership Academy responds to the vital, perhaps unique, role of lawyers as community and political leaders, as well as leaders in our profession,” said former NCBA President Gene Pridgen, who chairs the subcommittee overseeing The Leadership Academy.

“There is no doubt that Benita is an effective leader,” says Tharrington Smith Managing Partner Fred Morelock. “She leads by taking the first step herself, and engaging and encouraging those around her to strive for success.”

Jones, a North Carolina native, attended magnet schools in Raleigh and graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. After graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University in 2004, she earned her Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC in 2007. Jones is admitted to practice law in North Carolina and Virginia, as well as before the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Court for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina.
