We are pleased to announce that Education Law Section Attorney Colin Shive will serve as site coordinator for the Durham Ask-a-Lawyer Day public service event on February 6, 2016.

Volunteer attorneys are needed for the event and should contact Colin Shive by filling out this form: http://tharringtonsmith.com/ask-a-lawyer-volunteer-sign-up/, by calling Colin at 919-821-4711, or by emailing him at cshive@tsmithlaw.com. Held on a Saturday morning, this volunteer effort should require approximately 5 total hours of attorney time, from coordination through event end. The 2016 event location is yet to be finalized, but will likely be held in downtown Durham.

Ask-A-Lawyer Day is an annual event sponsored by the Community Relations Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. As a public service, Ask-A-Lawyer Day utilizes volunteer lawyers to provide free legal consultations to North Carolina citizens on whatever legal issues they may have. The event is open to the public. No attorney-client relationship is formed between the volunteer attorney and citizen participant. Information regarding North Carolina Attorney Referral Service will be available for those citizens needing representation. In 2015, approximately 80 lawyers volunteered their services to the Ask-A-Lawyer Day event. It was hosted by 10 North Carolina cities, and served more than 300 citizens.

The Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association is often referred to as the service arm of the NCBA. The Young Lawyers Division sponsors a multitude of worthwhile projects and public service endeavors, allowing young lawyers an introduction to participation in service to the profession and the citizens of the state they serve. The YLD is open to all members of the Bar under the age of 36, and any member practicing less than 3 years irrespective of age. Volunteers for Ask-A-Lawyer Day are not limited to “young lawyers”.
