Lynn Burleson Contributes to the NCBA's Family Law Section History

In late 2014, the North Carolina Bar Association published a history of the Family Law Section spanning from 1980 to 2013. Co-authoring the history is Tharrington Smith’s own, Lynn P. Burleson. Mr. Burleson provided history from 1980 to 2003, while Attorney Amy L. Britt, of Raleigh’s Cheshire, Parker, Schneider & Bryan, provided data for the decade following that. The report includes a history of officers and council members, as well as the range of services the NCBA has provided to family law attorneys across the state. This collaborative document exemplifies the changes that have taken place in matrimonial law in the last 35 years.

The North Carolina Bar Association is a non-governmental professional membership association for lawyers licensed to practice in North Carolina. The Family Law Section focuses its efforts on promoting improvements in family law practice and jurisprudence by legislative changes, legal education, practice guides, pro bono legal services, and mentoring programs. The Family Law Section provides information on legal and policy developments relating to children and families to matrimonial lawyers across the state. The section also sponsors continuing education to lawyers on equitable distribution and an intensive seminar in family law in alternate years, thereby furthering the knowledge of its members in all matters relating to family law. The section provides members with a substantive newsletter and helps mold the association’s legislative agenda for presentation to the General Assembly.

Lynn Burleson is a partner in Tharrington Smith’s family law section. A former district court judge, Mr. Burleson is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Family Law. He is an American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Fellow, an institution that recognizes less than 2,000 family lawyers nationwide, as well as an American College of Family Trial Lawyers Diplomate. He has consistently been recognized by Best Lawyers in America Family Law Section since 1995, and by North Carolina Super Lawyers since its inception in 2006. He received Best Lawyers in America’s prestigious Lawyer of the Year Award in Family Law for Raleigh in 2009.
