Tharrington Smith Staff Community Fund Spotlight: SPCA of Wake County

As a part of the Tharrington Smith Staff Community Fund, an employee-directed giving initiative, each member of the staff has picked a specific charity or non-profit organization that they believe enables positive change in the lives of others, and the firm has made a charitable donation to their chosen organization. Tharrington Smith staff members Wendi LeConey and Cindi Harrington both chose to support the SPCA of Wake County and they share the following introduction to this great community organization.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Wake County is a non-profit organization that serves the pets and people of the Wake County community. It is dedicated to creating a more humane community where every adoptable animal has a home. Each year the SPCA places over 3,000 animals in new homes through its innovative adoption programs and lost and found efforts! The mission of the SPCA of Wake County is to protect, shelter and promote the adoption of homeless animals, as well as provide education about responsible pet ownership and to reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs.

As Canine Butler volunteers at the SPCA Adoption Center, we are able to interact directly with the dogs and have learned that dogs teach us patience, commitment and selflessness. They provide people with immeasurable mental and physical benefits and we are so lucky to have them around to enrich our lives. As Canine Butlers it is our responsibility to take a quadrant of dogs out into the play yard for exercise and nature calls. While they are busy checking things out we are able to make sure their areas are clean and comfortable. We also spend time in the play yard making sure the dogs have fun and get along well with each other and we can also take this opportunity to work with each of them on their commands.

The SPCA of Wake County supports a number of community programs like Animeals Program, Pet Food Pantry, and the low-cost clinic. Animeals provides nutritious meals for pets belonging to home-bound senior and disabled adults living in Wake County who may be forced to choose between feeding their pets and heating their homes, paying their bills or taking their medications. The SPCA’s Pet Food Pantry program provides a month’s supply of pet food to participants of the new Animeals program and the clinic is able to reduce the number of unwanted animals euthanized each year by offering spaying and neutering for thousands of pets at a low cost (between $30-$45) to the public.

The SPCA of Wake County’s adoption programs allow pets to live in a home environment, and opens up much needed space at their facilities. The SPCA provides all food, supplies and medical care to foster animals in the SPCA’s foster program. With community support they are able to help families in our community enjoy the benefits of having a family pet while working towards the larger goal of reducing the number of animals killed annually in our community.
