No Criminal Charges Brought in $700,000.00 False Tax Returns Case

A North Carolina taxpayer who understated his tax liability by nearly $700,000.00 escaped criminal prosecution when his attorneys successfully negotiated a voluntary disclosure agreement with prosecutors. Under the agreement, no criminal charges will be brought against the taxpayer. The case is significant not only because of the tax dollars involved, but because North Carolina criminal investigators ordinarily do not recognize a voluntary disclosure in cases of suspected tax evasion and false tax returns.

The taxpayer was represented by Douglas E. Kingsbery and Derick R. Vollrath of Tharrington Smith, L.L.P. in Raleigh, North Carolina.
